Mobile app for an Intercity transportation System
This projects represents an opportunity to improve the experience hundreds of thousands
of people that use the MTS (Massive Transportation System) of the Dominican Republic.
Need of digital solution for
travel ticket balance addition and consultation.
In Latin America, one of the fastest growing cities
is Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, which will grow
4.9% annually on average by 2035 according to the report published by BBC News.
While the new Mass Transportation system is the top choice for many Dominicans,
many complain about the long lines and the cash-only payment method.
Uncovering insights through contextual research
While conducting research I did some contextual inquiry.
Here are some general observations:
Subway and Zipline integration is great. Users knew exactly where to go.
Opret nailed it with their user-friendly Maps. Signs, and symbols are everywhere,
making it super easy to find your way around.
The travel ticket reader did not acknowledge my card balance. According to the driver,
when I add at least RD$35 pesos, the travel ticket reader recognizes my card's balance.
But when I buy trips, the reader doesn't recognize it.
Despite facing some inconveniences, I safely reached my destination.
We can definitely enhance the Mass Transportation System by taking a more holistic approach.

The proposal to contribute to the improvement of this problem is to design a digital
ecosystem that interconnects the STM services and allows users to perform two basic tasks:
Check your balance
Top up your card balance
This idea has been requested by users through social networks. Many have commented on the long lines
that are generated as a result of the need to top up the balance, not to mention the query,
since you have to pass the card through the machine to be able to verify your balance.
